Toto's discography comprises 13 studio albums and four live albums. There are also a few compilations. In addition to releasing original music, Toto has also done collaborations with other artists and on soundtracks for films. Toto has won numerous Grammy Awards for their work.
Before Toto was formed, members of the band performed session work for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session percussionist Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs' 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in 1976 as a result of the collaboration.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics due to the absence of hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen left, and the band held auditions to find a new frontman. The band selected guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in the year 1986.
In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by going through several old demos and tapes to release a special album called Toto XX. The album was well received by fans and the band embarked on a tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
During the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun the drummer Leland Sklar departed from the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included recordings from the tour and an interview with the band.
